SSETI Express - Optical Downlink Report

On 27 October 2005 the first European student micro-satellite was launched into orbit.  It was called SSETI Express, and I was the Project Manager and System Engineer.  It was this fantastic mission that kicked-off my career and left me permanently obsessed with the space industry.

Exactly 10 years later the former SSETI Express launch campaign team met in Kiruna, Sweden, to celebrate the anniversary of the launch by trying to see the satellite during the long Arctic nights.  I provided the 'Portable Optical Groundstation' for this challenge.

The Uncertainty Principle - Mongol Rally 2012

16,000km, 19 countries, 7 weeks, 2 idiots, 1 tiny car

In the summer of 2012 two newlyweds embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, and a honeymoon with a difference.  Packing our lives into Charlie the Fiat Panda, we set off to drive from the UK to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to raise €5,000 for charity.

Along the way we were faced with deserts and mountain ranges, war-zones and corruption, breakdowns and heartaches.  This is our story, told in the original blog we wrote on the road, illustrated with hundreds of pictures.

HDR Tutorial

Why, What, How and When?

I like to produce images which truly reflect my memories of a scene. However, this is not always possible with standard photography because our cameras simply cannot see the same dynamic range that our eyes can.

Therefore some of my work makes use of various techniques that increase the captured dynamic range. Collectively these tools are often known as 'High Dynamic Range' processing.

I have written a presentation and tutorial on this topic so that you can try it too. Download it here for free:
